AppleCare+ Debuts On October 14th

Apple yesterday announced its new AppleCare+ program for iPhone available beginning October 14. The $99 package extends your iDevice’s repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original purchase date. In addition, it adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling, with each subject to a $49 service fee.
In making the announcement, Apple discontinued its $69 AppleCare program for the iPhone. This program, while less expensive, didn’t include coverage for accidental damage.
According to the AppleCare+ webpage:
Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90 days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling, each subject to a $49 service feeAppleCare+ will be available for any new iPhone purchase. Again, beginning October 14 – the day the iPhone 4S arrives.
