Freefall Math Offers Math Practice And Games
Freefall Math ($0.99) by Merge Mobile gives your child a chance to practice math problems in a whimsical app.
Practicing math can certainly be boring, when all you have is flashcards or a math book. But this app aims to make practice more tolerable by presenting it with a spoonful of sugar.
The math problems are presented in different ways, though they share the same setup; the problem appears in the middle of the screen, and boxes at the bottom.
Numbers slowly fall from the top of the screen, and you’ll need to guide the answer into the correct box to complete the problem. Trying to put the wrong number in the box results in the number bouncing out of it.
However, be careful when your child is putting the right answer in the box. I noticed that it might bounce away as a wrong answer if it's not inserted at the correct angle, or if placed too quickly. This could certainly be frustrating for kids who know they have the right answer, but don't know why it won't take.
After a couple of rounds, the app rewards the child by playing different games. There is no instruction or points system behind the games; just something to do for fun. You might want to make sure your child doesn't get too carried away with them, though, because there is no time limit on them.
The settings menu gives the option of which operations you would like to have turned on, allowing your child to focus on a specific operation. This also helps customize the experience to meet the development appropriateness for your child. You can also set the difficulty of the questions to beginner or advanced.
Those looking for an app to actually teach operations, such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, would want to look at another app (or even a good old math book).
