Like Fragger? Try Monster Island - Plus A Chance To Win!

October 3, 2011

Monster Island ($0.99) by Miniclip.com is a physics based puzzler game that is a lot like Miniclip’s other hit game, Fragger. Unlike Fragger, however, Monster Island has a variety of new projectiles, plus a cast of cute and colorful characters, both of which make the game feel fresh and interesting.

The general concept is that a group of monsters have been bullying and harassing the inhabitants of Monster Island, and it’s your job to use mini-monster bombs to get rid of the invaders.

There are five different monster bomb types: Rocko, Sticky, Xplode, Blui, and Don Tonator. Each of them have abilities that work in different ways for all kinds of situations. For example, Xplode will detonate on impact, while Rocko doesn’t explode at all.

Aiming your monster bombs is done by dragging a finger to select direction and power, and then tapping to release the projectile. If your trajectory is successful, the big, bad monsters will turn into monster goo.

All of the bombs must be used in unique and innovative ways in order to solve puzzles and defeat all of the monsters in each level. You will often get several combinations of bombs and you must decide where and how to use them.

Your default bomb-tossing monster is a sweet little yellow guy named Slartie. You can purchase new monsters with coins that are earned after every level, though earning them is painfully slow.

The game developers want to encourage you to buy coins using in-app purchases, and they also sell new levels and solutions. Skipping more than two levels will also cost you cash. Prices are a little unreasonable, with two extra worlds unlockable for $9.99 and all solutions unlocked for $14.99.

I loved the look and feel of this game, though the first forty levels were way too easy and tedious to get through. After that, the difficulty ramped up and Monster Island turned out to be a lot of fun. I do wish that the game cost more upfront rather than nickel-and-diming you for every game addition.

If you were a fan of Fragger, Monster Island is another game that you’re sure to love, and at just $0.99 (or $2.99 for the iPad version), it’s a great deal, provided you don’t purchase any of the extras.

Guess what? We have one copy of Monster Island HD for the iPad to give away to one of our readers. Want to enter to win? Just leave a comment here (with a valid email address so that we may contact the winner) before Friday, October 7 at 4 p.m. PDT. Good Luck!
