Movie Quotes Hangman ($0.99) by Red Sparrow Design puts a character's life on the line as you guess movie titles.
Parodying a modern director, the introduction tells the dramatic story of Qurentin Tentarino. It seems Tentarino tried to create a movie that borrowed scenes from every other successful movie ever made. But he was caught and sent before a judge for copyright infringement. The judge ordered him to be hung, unless he could correctly guess the titles of movies that certain quotes came from.
That's where you come in.
Tentarino stands on the gallows with a noose around his neck. An executioner waits on the far side of the screen for an incorrect guess at a letter. Guess wrong, and he'll step closer to the lever that will drop Tentarino. There's a crow as well, but he's mainly there for decoration.
You have fifty rounds to go through before Tentarino can be saved. Some of the quotes are obvious (like the "stinking badges" line from "The Treasure of The Sierra Madre"), while others aren't as easily recognizable. At least you have your trusty skills gathered from hours of indoor recess during elementary school to help you.
Guess a letter to fill in the appropriate blank, and the letter will gray out after being selected. However, it's game over if you guess eight letters wrong. You can use up to three wild cards to skip a round if you're really stuck.
The graphics are nothing more than silhouettes against a gray, cloudy sky, but I think it works for this dark humored game. What doesn't work is the music. It's so shrill and repetitive that it does nothing for the game or my nerves.
I muted the game and found it more enjoyable. Of course, muting it also means missing out on hearing taps after you lose and poor Tentarino gets hung.
