Fly World War I Planes In 3D With Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory
Sky Gamblers: Rise Of Glory ($4.99) by Namco Networks America Inc. is a flight simulator game for iOS that is very real-feeling. It has exceptional graphics and engaging gameplay, but is it worth the price tag?
There are 10 World War I planes you get to pilot throughout the game. You can fly them through different campaigns, play multiplayer modes, or create your own custom games to master and missions to complete.
You use the tilt controls to maneuver your plane and the joystick — located in the bottom left corner — controls the rudder. The tilt controls are what make it so difficult to fly these planes precisely, though. You can also swipe across the middle of the screen to perform some special maneuvers.
Multiplayer mode brings you many options. You can go up against up to seven other opponents in death match, defend your base, or capture the flag games. The aerial warfare in multiplayer is pretty intense and enjoyable — if only the controls were easier to manage.
This game has exceptional graphics and engaging gameplay, but the controls make it too difficult for me to actually get into it. I just wanted to be able to play instead of spending most of my time struggling with the tutorial. Maybe it's just me, but I found the planes very difficult to control on the iPhone. Typically, I would say it may be best to play this one on the iPad, but I'm not so sure it would be any different.
Sky Gamblers: Rise of Glory is available in the App Store as a universal app for $4.99. It also has full Game Center support with many achievements to obtain. You can even pick up where you left off on any device running iOS 5 using iCloud. Definitely a neat feature.
There is a lite version that you can try for free — which I would suggest doing — before dropping the money on the full version, just to see if you like it. To me, $4.99 is far too much to spend on a game that doesn't seem very user friendly.
