Trade In Your Birds For Some Medieval Weaponry In Troll Blaster
For better or worse, Angry Birds has become a genre. There have been several clones in the App Store; some good, some not so good. Fortunately, Troll Blaster - Physics Strategy Game ($0.99) by eMobiSoft Inc. falls into the former category.
Trolls have come out of hiding and intend to destroy the world. As you can imagine, it's up to you to blast them away.
The levels are set up how you'd expect. Blocks of varying sizes, shapes, and materials house a number of trolls, and it's your job to destroy it all to take them out.
Instead of birds, though, you have a handful of medieval weapons at your disposal: a crossbow, two cannons and even a rocket launcher. They had those during medieval times, right?
Each weapon does a different amount of damage to the various block materials. The crossbow does the least damage, followed by the regular cannon. The red cannonballs explode on impact, doing even more damage. The rocket launcher does a huge amount of damage that radiates outward from the point of impact.
It's up to you to figure out which weapons work the best against which material. For example, everything destroys glass in one hit, but it takes several hits from a cannonball to get through wood. The physics are occasionally questionable, but work pretty well overall.
While the weapons available and their number of uses are predetermined for each level, you get to pick the order in which you use them. This adds a nice bit of strategy to how you approach each level. You can use the crossbow to take out a support beam, switch to the rocket launcher to take out the rest of the structure, then switch back to the crossbow to handle the remaining trolls.
The levels get pretty challenging, sometimes relying on luck to complete. This can get frustrating at times, especially if you're going for that three star rating, but mostly it inspires that "one more time" feeling.
Adding to the challenge are Game Center achievements and even some treasure chests to hit for bonus points.
It doesn't break any new ground, but that's okay. With clean graphics, decent physics and 64 levels across two environments, there's a lot of challenging fun to be had here for $.99.
If you just can't get enough of that Angry Birds action, check this one out.
