With iOS 5's Arrival, All Your iDevices Will Feel Snappier

October 11, 2011
When iOS 5 is released tomorrow, it won’t just bring new toys like Newsstand and iMessage to iDevices. The operating system will also bring significant speed boosts to existing handsets like the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, according to MacNN. Naturally, much of the talk in recent days has been about the upcoming release of the iPhone 4S and iOS 5. However, missing in this discussion is what the new OS means for existing iDevices. According to the report, iOS 5 will allow the iPhone 4, iPod Touch and iPhone 4S to “gain a noticeable performance boost when (iOS 5) is released.” In the case of the iPhone 4, these speed boosts will make the handset, first released in June 2010, better compete with newer handsets on the market. According to a recent BrowserMark test, the iPhone 4 ranked eight in overall browser “proficiency.” With iOS 5, however, the phone leaped to second place. When the iPhone 4S debuts on Friday, Apple will have three handsets in stores nationwide (the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the iPhone 4S). It's nice to know the company is committed to making each of those better than ever through software updates. As a reminder, iOS 5 is expected tomorrow via an iTunes update.
