AT&T Offering VoIP International Calls For Anyone With A Smartphone
November 8, 2011
AT&T this week unveiled a new app that allows users to make inexpensive international long distant calls using your existing wireless service. Best of all, it requires no monthly recurring charge, prepaid balance, commitment term, or AT&T wireless service. The app will route your call over the wireless network to the AT&T Call International gateway, using a routing number that will appear on your screen. The gateway will complete the call to your dialed number.
The AT&T Call International app allows consumers to make calls via Voice over IP (VoIP) whereas costs are billed directly to a credit card. Surprisingly, the app works even if you don’t already use AT&T’s wireless service.
After downloading the app for the first time, you’ll be asked to create an account, which must include a credit or debit card number. Once registration is complete, you can begin making phone calls. Yes, it really is that simple.
According to the AT&T Call International website, the service is being offered for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry smartphone owners. In addition, the app will even work internationally over Wi-Fi in most countries.
Sample rates include $.04/minute to Australia, China, and France, to $.08 to Mexico. Calling rates are available via the app and through the AT&T website for both wireline and mobile calls.
The AT&T Call International app is available now in the App Store.
