PhotoCal Arranges Your Pictures On A Calendar

November 22, 2011

PhotoCal - Sorting photos by date (Free) by CultStory Inc. features a new way to view your photo album.

While viewing your photo albums on an iOS device is a pretty cool experience, there is one way of presenting the pictures that isn't included; looking at your photos superimposed upon a calendar. But that's just what the team at CultStory has done.

This is actually a pretty neat idea. It's one thing to remember when you took a certain picture, but yet another to see it in the context of the entire month.

Getting started could take a bit of time, depending on how extensive your library is. The app only took a couple of minutes to process my over 8,000 photos.

Once the process finishes, you can see your pictures by albums or month (in a list format), or by calendar (which shows a thumbnail on a calendar layout). If you have multiple pictures for one day, the first one in the set will show. However, any other picture taken that day shows in a list at the bottom.

A cool touch would be the ability to change which thumbnail from the set appears on the calendar.

Seeing the pictures by album or month isn't anything new, which means that this app is all about the calendar view.

The ads in the free version are displayed as a banner across the bottom of the screen, and do become annoying with how frequently they swap out. Upgrading removes the ads and also means that you can add videos kept in your Photos app.

While this app does present a unique way to view your photo collection, its appeal is limited. It's kind of like one of those keychain picture viewers people are always peddling at amusement parks or beaches; they're fun to look at for a minute, and then that's it.
