Zombie Samurai HD ($1.99) by Alawar Entertainment, Inc is an innovative blend of a hack-and-slash combat game and a tower defense game. These are two seemingly unrelated genres that, as it turns out, go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly or marshmallows and chocolate.

In Zombie Samurai, the dead walk the earth, searching relentlessly for a tasty, brainy snack. The hordes of undead have unwittingly stumbled across a dojo housing a single samurai warrior. It’s your job to help the samurai hold off the zombies, protecting both his dojo and his oh-so-tasty gray matter.

Zombies are slain with a katana and a swipe of your finger, much like how you chop up apples and bananas in Fruit Ninja. Zombies can be sliced up into several pieces, and will often continue to shamble forward until you sever their heads. Some are wearing various items of clothing, which take extra swipes to remove, and in later levels, you’ll be engaged in an all out swiping frenzy.

In between levels, you can upgrade the dojo to make its defenses harder to breach, adding options like steel doors, a forcefield, and a moat. Upgrades use coins that are earned slaying zombies, but you can also buy coins as an in-app purchase if you want to hurry things along.

Swiping multiple zombies at once will earn you bonus points, and like in Fruit Ninja, there are bomb-equipped zombies which must be severed in just the right way to avoid damage to the dojo. Combo attacks will fill up your super strike meter, which can be used to execute all zombies at once. While you’re swiping away, make sure to avoid killing survivors, which will cost you precious coins.

Between levels, you will also need to repair your dojo, which will take constant damage. If your dojo ever reaches zero percent, it’s game over, and you’ll have to restart from the beginning. Luckily, there are leaderboards and achievements that serve as motivation to slash up zombies again and again.

Zombie Samurai is a lot like Fruit Ninja, minus the fruit. If you’re a fan of both Fruit Ninja and zombies, you’ll absolutely love this game. Zombie Samurai is available for both the iPhone at $0.99 and the iPad at $1.99.
