Each level requires players to send out troops to either collect dead bugs for food, fight living bugs, or collect shiny gems for the queen. Living bugs attack in waves. Unlike other castle defense style games, there are no gun turrets or stationary positions to set up. Fighting or soldier ants can be redirected to anywhere on the screen.

To send out a troop of food collecting ants, tap the anthill and drag a finger to where a dead bug is lying. The troops will follow the newly created trail to the bug and bring it back to the colony. If there are living insects wandering near the food, the collector ants will not venture forth, so soldier ants must be sent to protect the area. Tap the anthill and drag a circle around the food spot and the soldier ants will march to their post. The bugs they kill become more food to collect, and thus the cycle continues.

In order to add troops to the combat, they must be “bought” with food. It is important to keep a balance between food and troops. If there are no collectors, food does not get replenished and additional fighters can’t be added to protect the colony. If there are no fighters, collectors will not come out of the anthill to gather food.

Ants can be upgraded when players collect enough stars. Upgrades help the ants defeat the enemy and collect food more efficiently. There is an option to buy additional stars through in-app purchases.

Overall, this is a fun and addictive game for the iPhone/iPod touch or iPad. It is easy to learn, but challenging enough to keep you interested for hours. Pick it up in the App Store today, while it is on sale for only $0.99.
