Chinese CD-Dev Team Releases Siri App On Cydia

December 5, 2011
As the old rhyme tells us they so often enjoy, the Chinese "played joke" earlier today when a rogue group of hackers, calling themselves the CD-Dev Team, dropped a Cydia release said to offer the full Siri experience on any GSM or CDMA iPhone 4. Called H1Siri, the app utilizes CD-Dev Team servers to process voice requests and send them--disguised as official iPhone 4S queries--along to Apple's servers. The method is illegal, as it uses cracks and copyrighted code; but the promise of full Siri access may be enough for some to sidestep their morals and take the plunge. Only it doesn't really work, as TechCrunch is quick to point out:
Numerous posts from brave (crazy) early adopters report various complaints after installing. For example, it has been said to cause random reboots, break the camera, brick the phone, mess up the Settings app, cause the phone to get stuck at the Apple logo and other such things.
Furthermore, iPhone guru chpwn recently tweeted the following bit of advice:
Please note: if you use a proxy to access Siri, you may be sending your Email, SMS, Calendar, Contacts, Location, etc though that server.
All warnings aside, if you've just got to have Siri on your last-gen iPhone, you can find the requisite links and download information on iDownloadBlog's story-breaking post. Update: CD-Dev Team's servers are down, and may be for some time. It isn't yet clear whether Apple discovered the hack and shut it down, or if the servers were simply overwhelmed by the load.
