Connect The Blocks And Light Up The Darkness In Blockwick
Blockwick (Free) by Kieffer Bros. is a must-have for puzzle fans.
Blockwick is a place that has a lot of blocks. These blocks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and the important ones are colored and have special symbols on them. In fact, they kind of remind me of runes (like in Diablo II). While you gaze at these blocks in awe because they are just so beautifully designed, there is an objective to the game: place the same-colored blocks next to each other so that they glow. To do this, just tap and drag a block to move them.
It sounds simple, right? Like all puzzle games, of course it starts out that way, but it definitely gets trickier later on. You will notice that there are other glossy and matte blocks; the glossy ones are moveable, but the matte ones aren’t. Even though the glossy ones can be moved, they can’t be rotated, so you will have to figure out a path for them. Additionally, sometimes you will encounter colored blocks that cannot be moved, so you will need to find a way to get the other same-colored blocks to that single, immobile block.
Some puzzles will have only one correct way to solve it, while some others may have multiple solutions. As long as you can get the same-colored blocks touching each other, it counts. This is what makes the game great.
Blockwick initially gives you the first three chapters for free. With each chapter, that’s 20 puzzles, so you get 60 total. The first chapter starts off fairly easy, as it’s only one color that you have to match. The second and third chapters will introduce other different shaped blocks, increasing the difficulty.
If you love the mechanics of Blockwick (and really, it’s actually hard to not like this game), there are three additional sections that can be purchased for $0.99 each. With each new section, you get another 60 puzzles, so you can have a total of 240 puzzles to solve. Another in-app purchase is the Master Key ($0.99), which will allow you to play any of the puzzles you’ve purchased in any order.
For those that make in-app purchases, but end up losing the game (perhaps a fresh restore), don’t worry – the Kieffer Bros. have made sure that you are able to restore any purchases you’ve made.
I am a huge fan of the Kieffer Bros. games (Aqueduct, Orba, Monster Soup), and I am definitely a fan of Blockwick now as well. Just like their other games, it’s a simple concept that proves to be a welcome challenge. It’s also one of the most gorgeous puzzle games I’ve seen in a while, and the music just adds to the overall experience.
If you’re a puzzle fan or just like the other Kieffer Bros. games, then I would highly recommend picking this one up. And while I may not have beaten all of the free levels just yet, I am going to purchase the other sections just to support this awesome developer and have more levels ready. Don’t pass this one up; it’s the must-have puzzle game for your iPhone and iPad.
