Breakout: Boost Offers New Gameplay, Bonuses
Breakout®: Boost (Free) by Atari kicks the classic game up a notch with insane power ups. Bam!
One of the new additions to the familiar game is a slider that changes the ball speed. The faster the ball moves, the more points you’ll earn for breaking bricks. What’s amazing about this is that you don't just set the speed before playing and then become stuck with it until the end of the level.
You can actually throttle the speed as much as you’d like, speeding up while the ball goes to town on the bricks, and then slowing it down as it comes back to your paddle.
The paddle is controlled by sliding your finger back and forth on it. While the game provides enough wiggle room if your finger starts riding up the screen, it’d still be nice to see the option of controlling the paddle with left and right buttons.
A point of contention for some may be that the free version only offers five levels. You’ll have to buy a booster pack if you want any additional levels or changes in gameplay. Each of the three booster packs features a set of nearly 80 more classic and challenge levels.
A wide range of enhancements is offered, such as acid ball, multi-ball, exploding bricks, or even the brick rows edging closer to your paddle.
Having tried all of the booster packs, the second booster pack is my favorite. The game rapidly goes from fun to insane when you have balls multiplying like rabbits. To top it all off, the challenge levels have exploding bricks, which will satisfy anyone looking for a big boom.
You won’t be so disappointed if you look at this game as a $0.99 paid app. At least you can take your pick of booster packs, which really are worth the dollar spent.
