Speedtrap Detector USA Doesn't Live Up To Its Name

December 9, 2011

Speedtrap Detector USA ($1.99) by ATOM STUDIOS tries to beat out higher-end speed trap detectors.

This app has a similar interface as MyRoute Safe Drive, including the speed warnings for city and highway driving, as well as a GPS map. You can set the local speed limits and receive notifications if you go over them (as if you didn’t know you were going faster than you should).

The GPS map only works for iPhone models 3GS or higher, and iPads with 3G.

However, what sets it apart is it’s ability to detect speed traps. Relying on a database of speed traps and mobile radars, the app will warn you if you come within range of one.

Or so it claims.

Naturally, I had to take this app for a road trip. I decided on a stretch of highway that goes from 65 to 35 mph due to construction. The local police are notorious for hanging out in that area (especially since it’s under an overpass). If I was going to pass a speed trap, I knew it would be there.

I glanced at the app for a second to see if there were any warnings. No warnings. I use my eyes and see that I’m passing three officers standing in the shadow of the underpass, waiting to pull someone over.

I also passed a state trooper cruiser and a police motorcycle (both on the prowl). Nothing.

I can hear you saying it now. What about radar guns? You didn’t really put that to the test. No, I didn’t. But that’s only because my iPad doesn’t detect microwave beams.

You’re welcome to give this app a try, but rubbing a lucky rabbit's foot will probably work better for avoiding speeding fines. Or better yet, just make sure someone is going faster than you.
