Save Adorable Falling Stars in Star Galaxy Tap

December 18, 2011

Star Galaxy Tap ($0.99) by Hocobi Inc. is a casual game that requires you to tap smiling stars as they fall across the screen. Let too many get by you and it’s game over.

Things start out easy enough, with just yellow stars to worry about, but the action gradually ramps up. Soon, blue stars are added. Tap three or more of these guys in succession and you’ll earn bonus combo points. The same applies to red stars, which are added in shortly thereafter.

It’s not all smiles and bright colors, though. Eventually, you’ll encounter obstacles, like clouds and some melancholy-looking meteors. Clouds prevent you from tapping any stars that fall behind them, while accidentally tapping a meteor depletes your health meter. Meteors will often get in the way of stars, occasionally making them difficult to avoid.

The difficulty ramps up as the screen becomes more and more cluttered, but there are some power-ups to help you out.

“Mr. Sunshine” restores one star to your health meter. Raindrops clear the entire screen for you. You can collect up to three raindrops and activate them at any time. Every once in a while, a UFO will appear on screen -- if you’re quick enough, tapping this will slow down time for a bit.

There are currently five different background themes. They are all beautifully painted but, aside from the Halloween theme, they don’t change the game in any way. The Halloween theme changes the background and all the items. For example, stars become pumpkins and meteors become bats. It’s a cute theme, but it doesn’t pop quite like the main one.

The music throughout the game is very soothing, and quite appropriate for a relaxing starry night.

In the end, it doesn’t break any new ground, and you probably won’t spend hours playing it. But Star Galaxy Tap is still fun to pick up and play when you have a few minutes to kill.
