Verses - a notebook for creative writers ($0.99) by Derek Kepner is a nifty tool for those crafting their next collection of poems or songs.

I absolutely love writing, even when it comes to forms of literature and poetry. Back when I went to school, I took some poetry classes and actually liked it – though I’d rather create my own poems. This can be tough though, especially if you plan to make it rhyme (seriously, this is one of the hardest things to do). Thankfully, there’s an app for that. Verses can be the best app to have around for aspiring poets, even songwriters.

When the app is opened, users are presented with a very minimal and clean interface. When it’s first launched, you get a screen that allows you to start writing. Write whatever comes to mind (that’s the best tip when it comes to writing).

The best part about Verses is that it can help you find words that will rhyme. To access this, simply tap on the “Rhymes” button at the top. It will bring up the Rhyming Dictionary, where you then just type in the word you want to rhyme with. An alphabetical list of words will show up that will rhyme with the word you want. Tapping on a word will insert it into your notepad.

When you’re finished with your work, you can tweet it out (if it’s short) using native iOS 5 Twitter integration, or you can save it in Verses. When you want to work on another creation, just tap on the list button and it will take you to all of your work – tap on the “+” button from there. Then just repeat your creative process from there.

When you view one of your multiple past writings, you can look through them all by swiping left and right. Each notepad page is like a page on your iPhone’s home screen, and you can even see the dots representing the pages on the bottom. Verses feels like something Apple designed themselves, which I liked.

However, despite the simplicity and elegance of the app, there’s always room for improvement. There is currently a lack of exporting your work (tweeting it out doesn’t really count) out of the app. I would hope to see something like Dropbox or iCloud syncing or backups in the future, as well as an export option.

Currently, the best thing about the app is the Rhyming Dictionary. Personally, I think that’s worth the price alone (hey, rhyming is pretty difficult).

If you’re one that writes poems or songs frequently and need some help with rhymes, then give this app a try. I just hope that the developers improve the app further by adding syncing and export/backup options in a future update.
