Free Yourself From The Tyranny Of Two-Dimensional Gaming With Paper Monsters

January 31, 2012

Paper Monsters ($0.99) by Crescent Moon Games is an adorable new game that revolutionizes the platform gaming genre. No longer are players relegated to two-dimensional side scrolling. Now, you can be free to roam levels near and far.

Platform gaming has not had much new to offer since the heyday of the Mario Brothers. While 2-D games are fun and challenging, they all do about the same thing. Players run, jump, smash and collect things. The design may change, but the basic attributes stay the same.

Paper Monsters fits into, and breaks away from, the 2-D mold by making use of the background. Players go through one tunnel and wind up in the background of the game. There are things to collect and baddies to avoid, just like in the foreground. Head through another tunnel and the hero will reappear out front again.

The rest of the game’s attributes are the same as traditional side-scrolling platformers. Collect buttons, golden paper clips and adventure cards for extra points, and to unlock achievements. Destroy enemies by jumping on their heads. Try to make it to the end of the level in record time.

As a bonus, players can use the gold buttons they have collected to purchase outfits for their boxy hero. Additional buttons can be bought through in-app purchases for those not patient enough to earn them.

The art stands out above most games in this price category. There is plenty to look at. Paper mushrooms pop out of the ground. Origami flowers bloom and bad guys turn into a puff of floating paper when destroyed.

Overall, this universal side scrolling adventure is at the top of its class for mobile gaming. The unique use of the background landscape makes it more interesting than traditional two-dimensional games. The price is unbelievably low at only $0.99. Pick it up in the App Store today.
