Traditional RPG Elements Found In Symphony Of Eternity

January 4, 2012

RPG - Symphony of Eternity ($8.99) by Kotobuki Solution Co., Ltd. is an RPG in a similar vein to just about any other RPG. Guide Kreist the hero, Dauturu the golem, and Laisshutia the princess through dungeons in order to seek a legendary weapon.

Those familiar with typical RPGs will be able to jump into the game without needing any orientation. One noticeable difference that I haven’t seen in an RPG before is the speed indicator. As you select your characters to attack the enemies, you will see a line up of what order everyone will take for attacking. You may do well to smite the creatures that are likely to attack first.

Movement is achieved by tapping on the screen where you would like to go. Another option is a directional pad, though this method of control requires more of a fine touch (especially if you aren’t playing it magnified on an iPad).

Though the story was perhaps the biggest drawback for me. Elements of the plot and dialogue felt like a stereotypical fantasy game; a princess runs to a warrior for help, mana is an energy that can be tapped into, and the heroes do that Final-Fantasy-winning-jig-thing when they win a fight.

I also fail to see why a mechanical golem provides advice to humans about how to handle their emotions. Dialogue such as “You don’t need to go as far as doing your best. Just get used to things, bit by bit,” feels trite, especially coming from a red-eyed golem.

But the golem isn’t the only one with the hokey dialogue. “I can’t think of anything more off-putting than having to watch a golem eating,” Kreist says. Really? I can think of more off-putting things.

At $8.99, I’m not sure you’re really getting your money’s worth. I think $0.99 would be a more appropriate price for what you get.
