Monster Wars ($0.99) by Liv Games s a re-imagining and follow up to Legendary Wars, which is a popular castle defense game with cartoony graphics and and great gameplay. If you’re familiar with Legendary Wars, and were a fan, you won’t be disappointed by Monster Wars. This is a faithful sequel that preserves the original gameplay elements while adding a few new tweaks and a slew of new units.

If you have played Legendary Wars, congratulations, you already know how to play Monster Wars. If not, you should know that this is a campaign mission based game where all of the levels require you to gather minerals and create minions to defend your castle from enemy units while trying to destroy the enemy’s dwelling.

As with Legendary Wars, Monster Wars starts out with a generic story about monsters and netherworlds and that shattered sunstone, but luckily none of us are playing this for the storyline, right? All we need to know is that we have something to defend, and something to attack.

Battles will take place on three lanes and the fighting is fierce. You’ll want to crank those minions out as fast as you can to keep up with the pace of the battle. You can order your units to attack, defend, or attack in groups, but you can also control them one by one if you tap a unit and then tap an enemy to attack. There are more than 15 new units in Monster Wars, which is one of the best gameplay additions.

Your miners constantly dig up gems (which you have to tap), and its those gems that are used to buy minions. Minions will, of course, have different abilities, as will enemies, so it’s best to try to match them up as well as you can.

Finishing a level will result in a bag of gems, which can be spent to upgrade your group of skeletons, zombies, and other undead minions with an RPG-like point system. You can make them faster, more powerful, and tougher to defeat. I enjoyed the character customization in Legendary Wars, so I’m glad that’s a gameplay element that stuck around.

In Monster Wars, gameplay is once again broken up with bonus levels. You will find more escort levels where you guard a special ally towards the enemy castle, and the side-scrolling missions have been updated with different mission objectives.

I always had problems controlling units in Legendary Wars, and the same was true of Monster Wars. Tapping and directing units can be frustrating, and it’s often difficult to keep up with the fun parts of the gameplay while you’re stuck focusing on the goblin miner’s next gem drop.

I’d say Monster Wars is on par with Legendary Wars, so if you enjoyed that game, you’ll likely enjoy this one. Monster Wars has a ton of content, with an extremely long campaign plus extra endless modes. All in all, Monster Wars shares many of the same gameplay elements, and while it has its flaws, it’s still a game that’s worth $0.99.
