RPS Rumble (Free) by Continuous Integration Inc. is a lucha libre themed puzzle game of rock, paper, scissors. You’re presented with a board of tiles and each tile represents one of three different characters.

Each character has strengths and weaknesses that you’ll be familiar with if you’ve ever played the popular hand game. Rock smashes scissors, scissors cut paper, and paper defeats rock.

The goal in the game is to clear all of the tiles off of the board, by following those rules and by using tap gestures to swap one tile with another, as you would do in a match-3 game like Bejeweled.

This is harder than it sounds, especially on the more complex boards. There are four difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert; Anything beyond easy will require some serious strategizing to complete.

RPS Rumble is a freemium game, so you are given a limited number of puzzles to solve until you invest money in purchasing more. You’re also given a single hint and a single undo, both of which can be replenished with cash. Without undo functionality, when you make a game-breaking move, you have to start over from the beginning.

The tiles in RPS Rumble are decorated with little luchador faces, but a simple rock, paper, scissors game with a quirky theme is still just a rock, paper, scissors game at its core. What I’m getting at is that this game isn’t particularly inspired or exciting, and it left me wondering if a basic game like rock, paper, scissors could compete with the hundreds and thousands of more complex games in the App Store.

Without any special tiles, bonus moves, or extras, I found RPS Rumble’s gameplay to be too simplistic, if I’m being honest. Of course, those of you who are stalwart puzzle lovers may disagree and might just enjoy the challenge of clearing the board, and since it is a free game, it’s worth the download to check it out.
