Get Into The Ring In WrestleFest Premium

February 22, 2012

WrestleFest Premium ($2.99) by THQ Inc. takes thumb wrestling to a whole different level. This is actually an updated rendition of the arcade game, back when the WWE used to be WWF.

Classic wrestlers such as Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Macho Man Randy Savage join current stars like John Cena and Randy Orton.

Go alone or with a partner to square off against your opponent. Use whatever you can to knock your opponent down and pin him (read: tap buttons furiously). Depending on how much health he has in his meter at the top, you’ll be able to beat him.

If you should happen to be pinned, you can hit the red button to get back on your feet (read: tap button furiously).

Sadly, folding chairs are not available.

The controls consist of a joystick on the left and kick and punch buttons on the right, looking quite similar to its predecessor. Using the buttons with the joystick will get you different results, such as bouncing off the ropes, pinning, or grabbing your opponent in a head lock.

If Think Geek’s iCade was supported, you'd have a true arcade experience.

Different modes are available, including: Exhibition, Road to WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, Saturday Night's Main Event Tournament, Tag Team, and Gauntlet Match. With so many different options to choose from, you'd have little fear of the game becoming repetitive.

Multiplayer is also available through Game Center.

Loading the game takes a while, especially when between menu screens. It’s also annoying that to select anything from game modes to players to menu options requires double tapping the item, as if once wasn’t enough.

An in-app purchase of $0.99 will unlock other wrestlers, such as Triple H, Big Boss Man, and Shawn Michaels, as well as the WCW Nitro Arena. According to the App Store site, more content will be available every 30 days.

Fans of WWE, or even those who wax nostalgic about the arcade game, will definitely want to jump into the ring for this game. Of course it should go without saying, but please don’t try the real thing at home.

Your little brother can only take so much.
