The game board is a series of hexagon shaped tiles with different colors that represent four players. Players start off with randomly generated tiles and “houses” across the board. Houses allow sections of land to generate money that is used to recruit soldiers and knights. The military can be placed on the board adjacent to the tile that the player owns. When placed, the soldier will conquer that tile and it will become the player’s land. As tiles are joined together, more money can be generated to build larger armies and stronger fortresses. Before long, one player will own all of the tiles and the game will end.
In order to keep opponents from building up their forces and conquering land, players can cut off resources to other's military. Houses and fortresses must be connected by land to soldiers and knights in order for them to stay alive. If there is no connecting land between them, military personnel will die.
There are over 50 levels to conquer in Single Campaign mode. Players start with “beginner” land and move to Europe after beating the first nine levels. Players will conquer Europe, America, Asia and Africa. This game also offers online multiplayer mode and pass-and-play mode with up to four people.
The game is fairly difficult to understand at first. There is a tutorial, but it doesn’t clarify some of the complex strategy options. The best way to tackle this game is to play it in “easy” mode until you get the hang of it.
The AI players’ turns fly by in a flash. This is nice for moving the game along quickly, but keeps new players from understanding the nuances of the gameplay. It would be nice if there were a way to speed up or slow down AI players’ turns. This would allow real life players the chance to see how the game is supposed to be played.
