ARG Zombies Soon To Be Invading A Neighborhood Near You!

March 5, 2012
Oh zombies, why must you haunt me so? Yes that's right, I'm writing another article about zombies ... The title I want to bring to your attention today looks set to be a very unique experience and is yet another gem, potentially, made possible by Kickstarter. I would like to introduce you to ARG Zombies, "a mobile alternative reality zombie game." One of the creative minds behind ARG Zombies, Owen Morris, posted the following handy video to help explain exactly what he is hoping to achieve with ARG Zombies: The project sees the user struggling to survive in a, now a little clichéd, zombie apocalypse scenario. With ARG Zombies you will have to recruit friends, raid buildings, battle strangers and pit yourself against the zombie hordes in a turn based RPG style. So how does ARG Zombies actually work? Well, that's the clever part. The team behind the ARG Zombies project have stated that they feel that most games don't take full advantage of your smartphone's many features.  A key "feature" of a smartphone is that it goes everywhere you go, something ARG Zombies hopes to capitalize on. The way ARG Zombies plays changes depending on your current location and through the following key features:
  • Proximity Gaming: you may only trade/duel with other players that are within 200 meter proximity of your device, and your character is linked to the GPS location of your device.  Movement is accomplished by getting up and moving around in the real world!  Search your surrounding area as you go about your day. Discover new monsters that have limited roaming areas, lurking in their territory.
  • QR Scanning: Monsters, items, missions, and merchandise all interface with the game through the camera in the form of a barcode scan.  Purchasing a tshirt or keychain will become an interactive item over the life of the game!
  • Clearing Current Location: Who wants to just check-in when you can clear the building of zombies and claim the spoils of your victory?!  ARG Zombies will allow players to do just that. Play at each location you visit through your day- digging through the world for supplies you will need to both survive and thrive!
I may be showing my age here (I'm 27 if you're interested), but the basics of ARG Zombies sound like the perfect evolution of the failed gaming system Barcode Battler from the early '90s. I coveted a Barcode Battler as a child, but never managed to get one. Maybe ARG Zombies will make up for this. According to the Kickstarter page, Owen Morris actually came up with the idea of ARG Zombies while deployed with the military in South Afghanistan. Any game idea, especially this revolutionary, devised by a Marine in a war zone certainly deserves some attention. If you are interested in learning more about the ARG Zombies project visit the Kickstarter page or the official site. There you will find all the information you need, along with the details of some pretty great swag for those that contribute to the project. You can even get your name in the credits for just $1.00. Stay safe out there, 2012 is certainly shaping up to be the year of the zombie.
