Holy Retina Comics Batman!

Holy Retina Comics Batman!

March 19, 2012
You may have read that, since Apple released its new iPad last week, there has been an influx of app updates that really take advantage of the gorgeous new Retina display. It seems that many of the updated apps are games or Apple's own offerings, though some notable apps such as Tweetbot and Day One also received nice Retina updates. If you are a comic book reader I have good news for you on the Retina front, as the most popular comic reading app, Comics by Comixology, is being readied for a big Retina update. The iPad and iPad 2 do an admirable job of displaying comics, but by taking advantage of the new iPad's Retina display, they will soon look absolutely stunning. Comixology has already submitted the Retina update to Apple so it should be available fairly soon. According to MacWorld writer Jason Snell, the HD comics are really something to behold. Jason advises that the colors are crisp and sharp and text is razor sharp, just as you'd expect from something optimized for the Retina display of the New iPad. If you have updated any of your apps recently to Retina ready versions you will have noticed that the sizes have almost tripled in size in some circumstances. There is some good news on this front as Comixology CEO David Steinberger has said that you will only receive the updated sizes if you download from a new iPad. Steinberger has also advised that Comixology is working hard to update their back catalog of comics to take advantage of the Retina display. Updated "HD" versions will be offered free of charge for comics that have already been purchased. Do you read comics on your iPad using Comics by Comixology? Are you looking forward to getting "HD" versions of all your favorites?
