Bitter Sam ($0.99) by Moon Active is a physics-based tilt-motion game featuring a cute but apathetic creature who was kidnapped by a wicked scientist. Nothing in Sam’s life seems to go right, and now it’s gotten even worse.

Sam has been tied up with a thread and lowered into a jar filled with horrors - it’s your job to help him swing back and forth to avoid obstacles and collect power ups as he gathers crystals and moves to even more dangerous levels. If Sam manages to get all of the crystals, he’ll be rewarded with the sweet taste of freedom.

This is a casual game, so playing is simple. You tilt your device left and right, and Sam will swing in that direction. Sam’s jar is filled with nasty barriers, such as sharp edged ledges that will slice his thread right in half and send Sam to his doom if you don’t avoid them.

I inwardly groan every time that I open up a game and find out that it has tilt-motion controls, but Bitter Sam’s controls are well calibrated and easy to use. Just a tiny tilt works perfectly, and I had no trouble getting through quite a few of the levels.

Levels start out simple, with just a few things to avoid, but quickly ramp up in difficulty. You will need to avoid crushing Sam on rocks and slicing him up on blades while trying to grab that elusive crystal.

It’s not always an easy task to get to it, so you may be playing some levels more than once. You don’t need to get a crystal from every level though. A small number is sufficient to progress to the next area, so you can skip the trickier crystals.

At times, you will need to swing Sam over to grab power ups, like reinforced rope that resists cutting and squishy flying pigs that can protect him from getting banged up.

Aside from the solid controls and fun gameplay, Bitter Sam’s also got great graphics (that miserable little bugger is cute), fitting music, and plenty of Game Center achievements to earn, so this game is the total package.

If you’re looking to pick up a new casual title this week, you won’t go wrong with Bitter Sam.
