Ball on a Wall Pocket ($0.99) by SmallGreenHill turns the object of control from the ball to the platforms the ball bounces on. That’s not to say you can’t control the ball, but you’ll find greater success if you’re able to “unlearn” the need to focus only on that.
The gameplay is reminiscent of The Tower of Zarbatz, in that you have to build platforms or walls in order to suit your needs, but this isn’t some kind of permanent construction. You’ll need to constantly stay one step ahead of where you’ll need to build.
The trick is to not get complacent with thinking your ball will stay in the level. As you focus on not letting the ball drop, make sure you’re not neglecting the sides, which will allow the ball to bounce out of bounds.
Once the ball leaves the area of play, it will reappear with a timer and an arrow pointing in the direction that it will move once the timer runs out. This gives you just enough time to build a wall where it’s going to go and come up with where you want it to go next.
You can bounce the ball by tapping on it. Tapping on it three times results in a triple bounce. This is good for giving the ball some momentum if it’s lost it, though ideally you’ll use your blocks to guide it.
The game offers 50 levels across 10 different stages. Each stage (named after a color) ups the challenge as you progress. You have to earn your dues first before you can unlock the other levels.
Each level offers the opportunity to collect as many cogs, colorcubes, pickups, and extra lives as possible. They’ll scatter in every direction, so you’ll need to act quickly to pick them up before they disappear.
You can buy a custom skin for your ball once you’ve saved up 30 coins. There are 26 different skins to unlock, from sports-themed to zany.
This is a good challenge for those up to it. The fact that you have to control the blocks rather than the ball presents a fun method of gameplay.
