HungrySquid ($0.99) by Michal Malewicz is a fantastic new puzzle game that is unlike anything you’ve played so far. Help the keepers of the universe protect the knowledge of the ages by solving complex multifaceted brainteasers.

Players start out with a grid of hexagons with a squid in the middle. Some of the hexagons have symbols on them. Rows can be rotated to change the placement of symbols. When the correct symbols are lined up, the player taps the squid, which releases smart goo. The goo travels along the path that was set by the symbols until it escapes the grid. The goal is to get as much smart goo off of the grid as possible through as many paths as possible.

There are different symbols that affect the path of the goo. For example, one symbol might be of a branch that has three different routes while another may only have a single straight line that forces the goo to one specific hexagon. The goo will release from the squid in as many paths as are lined up in the first row of hexagons. Line up the various symbols with as many paths as possible so that the goo has more exits to take. Crossing paths and tapping specific purple hexagons before the goo begins to flow will generate bonus points.

The puzzles are complex and challenging and the help guide doesn’t fully explain how each of the symbols works to create the path that the goo will take. You will figure it out eventually through trial-and-error, but I’d like to see a detailed list of the direction that each symbol causes the goo to travel.

There are 60 levels across four different planets with additional levels in the works. Eventually, the developers plan to offer custom made levels so that players can create their own puzzles. This app would be perfect for the iPad. Hopefully, the developers are also working on making this a universal game.

For only $0.99, you are getting a real bargain with this game. It is easy to get through the levels, but very difficult to do well on them. The puzzles are very challenging and complex, but players aren’t left frustrated at not being able to solve them. If you are looking for a challenging puzzle game, this is an absolute must-have.
