Lead The Hive To Nectar And Honey In Bee Leader
Bee Leader ($0.99) by Flightless lets you play the role of a honey bee, gathering up nectar from flowers so the hive can produce honey, while also finding your bee buddies and avoiding hazards like birds and spiders.
Your bee is controlled with a virtual joystick, and you’re able to touch anywhere on the screen to guide him. The controls are sensitive and will take some time to get used to. I’m not sure if the controls are that touchy to replicate the experience of being a bee, or if it’s an oversight, but it guiding your bee around the screen will take small, precise movements.
There are other control options, including a joystick with a set location and tilt motion in several different angles, but I preferred the original joystick controls to the other choices.
Your job in Bee Leader is to fly around and visit all of the flowers on the screen to suck up nectar. You’ll also need to fly through the air gathering dandelion spores, which contain nectar. Along the way, you’ll pick up bee buddies that help you gather more, and there’s also other bonus items to grab like honey pots that add to your total honey in the hive and clocks that add more time.
The levels are small and loop around, so you have a limited area to gather from. While you’re looking for nectar, you need to avoid obstacles, like storm clouds, birds, and spiders, all of which will detract from your total nectar level.
You have a set amount of time to gather in each level, and at the end, your bee returns to the hive with his spoils, unlocking the next level and revealing your total score.
There are four different areas, each with three levels. All of the areas are gorgeously illustrated and unique, from the desert area to the island area. Each place has different dangers to avoid, and levels get more perilous the further you go.
The game has several achievements to earn along with leaderboards for each different area, so you can compete with your friends to see who makes the best bee.
Bee Leader is a simple game, but its simplicity, coupled with its charming look and the challenge of filling up the hive, make it a lot of fun to play.
