Blujem ($0.99) by Mumukshu Ware is a simple word game designed to help people enhance their vocabularies and their spelling by unscrambling words from a wide variety of categories.

The app features words in 20 different sections, including animals, spices, moods, professions, science, and colors. There’s also an option to include words from all of the categories when you play.

During each game, you’ll be asked to unscramble a total of 15 words within the two minute timeline. Puzzles start off easy, for example, with “goat” in the animal category, but quickly progress to harder, longer words, like “chameleon.”

Unscrambling words is done by dragging the letters to their proper place with a finger. When you think you’ve properly unscrambled a word, hit the check mark to find out and to move on to the next word. The game will tell you if you’re right or wrong.

If you get stuck, you can use the hint button which will cost you 100 points from your score for each use. If you run out of points, you’re no longer able to use the hint button, but you can still get through the game even if you guess all of the words wrong.

At the end of the game, you’re given a list of the unscrambled words, along with their definitions, so you can learn about any words you didn’t previously know.

To keep players motivated, there’s a high score score list for each category so you can keep track of how well you’re doing and which areas need improvement.

Unfortunately, this app is of limited usefulness because it only includes predetermined categories without the ability to add your own words.

I’m not sure how useful it is to know the names of a bunch of different spices or herbs or insects when trying to improve your general vocabulary. After all, how often can you possibly use words like cassia and asafetida?

It would be a lot more useful if you could insert your own words into the app and have it pull dictionary definitions automatically, which would allow kids and adults alike to use the app for genuine studying and education.

As it stands, if you enjoy unscrambling words you will likely Blujem, but don’t expect to learn a lot while using the app. If you want to try it out before buying, you can check out the lite version, which is available for free.
