Swat, Spray, And Zap Bugs To Oblivion In Bug Assault

May 19, 2012

Bug Assault ($0.99) by Namco Networks America Inc. Games features a variety of pesky bugs that must be eliminated by you and your trusty bug zapper, aka, your fingers. The goal in the game is to zap all of the bugs before they can run off the edges of the screen.

To slaughter bugs, you use two fingers on the screen to create a line of electricity, which will zap anything in its path. This means you can kill multiple bugs at once. You can’t zap with abandon, however, because if you zap a good bug - the ladybug, you will be penalized.

Letting a bug escape will cost you one life point, while zapping a ladybug will cost you five. You start out with 20 life points all together, and when they are depleted, it’s game over.

The game is organized into stages, and after each stage, there’s a boss fight. Boss fights are challenging, and will consist of special bugs like the multiplying spider, the hard-shelled tick, or the bug surrounded by a protective shield of ladybugs. If you fail a boss fight, the game ends.

There are challenges to complete in the game, in addition to regular achievements. One challenge might be eliminating a certain number of bugs, while another might be slaying three bosses in a single game.

During the course of the game, you will earn acorns, which can be used to purchase other bug slaying weapons like the tesla coil, the newspaper, and the bug spray, which are used in conjunction with your normal zapping abilities.

These weapons are expensive and have a limited amount of ammo, and I found myself frustrated with my inability to earn acorns quickly enough to keep the game fun. I simply wasn’t earning enough on my own to be able to make regular purchases, and that’s because the game developers want you to buy those acorns through in-app purchases.

That said, the gameplay is addictive, and I loved the bright and colorful graphics. With a simple tweak to the acorn mechanic, I think this game could be a lot of fun.
