Down The Hatch! Promises Devilish Fun
Down The Hatch! ($0.99) by END Games Entertainment has you tilt your iDevice to guide Stinky the imp through his free fall. Stinky finds an enormous refrigerator full of food up in the clouds.
But once he tips the fridge over, all of the donuts, cakes, and pies plummet toward the earth. What else would a self-respecting imp do, but chase after them?
So begins your adventure.
Tilt the device from side to side or up and down to move Stinky as he falls. Eating as much food as you can leads to multipliers.
But watch out for the baddies. Angry birds, sneezing thunderclouds, and other assorted nasties are there to rain on your eating spree.
Bumping into an obstacle will deplete your life meter, rather than ending the game all together. This is nice because it gives you some wiggle room as a player.
You’re required to calibrate your device each time you start a new game. What I like about the calibration is that it offers a chance to test it. Once you’re calibrated, you’ll need to keep Stinky in the center of a circle for three seconds.
This not only verifies your calibration, but it also gives you an idea of what position would be ideal for you to hold (the developer recommends staying in the middle of the screen to make the most progress).
During the game it only takes subtle movements to move Stinky. I played the game on the iPad, which worked fine, though I imagine the iPhone would give you even tighter control.
The one thing I wish was present in the settings is a way to inverse the controls. I don’t do well with the whole “down-is-up, up-is-down” setup.
This is an awesome game. Everything from the impish humor to the angelic graphics works for this app. Even the jazzy soundtrack is not to be missed. I highly recommend it.
