Drop It! Is An Online Multiplayer Connect Four Game

May 10, 2012

Drop It! Premium ($1.99) by Aan Zee Gaming is a disappointingly unoriginal online multiplayer version of Connect Four. If you never played Connect Four when you were a child, I’ll give you a few pointers on the game, since Drop It! doesn’t include any instructions.

Connect Four is a two player game where each player is given different colored discs (red and yellow in Drop It). The players take turns dropping the discs into a seven-column six-row grid, where the pieces fall straight down. The goal is to connect four of your colored tiles vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, before your opponent does the same.

While playing, you’ll also need to keep a close eye on your opponent’s moves in order to use your discs to block them from making a match, so it’s as much a defensive game as it is an offensive game. The game ends when one player manages to match up four of their discs.

Connect Four is a fun strategy game, but I’m disappointed that Drop It is a clone of the board game, with no additions or changes. It’s not even the only game in the App Store that allows you to play this style of game against your friends.

When you open Drop It, before you can access the app in any way, you will have to enter a username and an email address. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m always wary when an app asks for an email address when it could simply connect to Game Center to find my friends.

The game also wanted to download my contact list to find my friends, but again, I think this would be better if it used Game Center integration to make matches. I’m not comfortable allowing a random game to have access to that information.

If you do not have any friends with the app you can be matched up against random players. I played a few randomly matched games, just to try it out, and it’s simple turn-based Connect Four.

You drop a disc, your opponent drops a disc, and so on, until someone matches four discs of the same color. There is a chat option built-in, so you can chat with your opponent while you play. The game does not have a single player option, so don’t purchase this if you want to play alone.

If you want to try Drop It, I suggest downloading the free, ad supported version, because there’s not much gameplay to justify the $1.99 price tag of the premium game.
