Kubikoo Is Really Cool

May 15, 2012

Kubikoo ($0.99) by Brother System takes the classic Rubik’s Cube game to a whole new level.

Just about any child from the 80s can recall trying his or her hand at that silly cube that looked so easy but turned out to be so hard. This app can actually bring back the fond memories without the desire to throw the game against the wall.

Playing the game involves moving either a column or row of the square tiles. Unlike the traditional game, you’re not trying to make each face of the cube a single color, and this game doesn’t feature a cube.

Instead you must match a specified design for each game and you have a flat square as your medium.

A variety of options are available for gameplay, including: classic (move all the like squares into quadrants), draw (arrange the squares to match a simple drawing), complex draw (the pictures to match are more detailed), and master (each square has multiple colors to match).

The classic mode offers different boards from 2x2x2 to 5x5x2, so even just playing this mode for a while will still entertain. Each new game will move the squares to a different spot, meaning that consistently playing a 2x2x2 game wouldn’t always be the same experience.

A viewer icon resides at the bottom of the screen to toggle back and forth between the finished design template and what you actually have.

This doesn’t really come in handy for the simple boards in classic play, since you know you’re dealing with quadrants, but it’s an absolute life saver for the advanced modes. The fact that it flashes away as soon as you release it makes it ideal for eyeing your progress as you go.

With 39 different boards to complete, your brain will certainly get a workout. It kind of poses a real challenge when you can’t just rip the colored stickers off of the squares and rearrange them to match.
