The first thing you have to do to play this game is sign up with either your Facebook account or submit your email. Once logged in, you are given basic instructions as to how to earn points and unlock new locations.
To play the game, make new friends and learn Spanish, simply start missions. Tap on the map. The park will be the only location available at first. You will see new missions and ones that have already been completed. To start a new mission, tap the title. You will then be asked to find someone to share it with. When you tap the “Play with someone new” button, you will see a list of people who have also downloaded and signed in to PlaySay Spanish. There are a lot of people.
Pick someone at random. Maybe you like their smile, or they are close in age to you. Maybe they live in Argentina and you went to school with a foreign exchange student from Buenos Aires. Whatever your reason, there are plenty of members to choose from.
When you have found your new friend, it’s time to start a conversation with them. You will be asked to record yourself saying, “Hello” in order to unlock the Spanish translation. You will then need to record yourself saying “Hola” in order for the conversation to be sent. The pronunciation judge is very picky. Make sure your voice fluctuation is correct.
Once you’ve made your connection and started a conversation with someone, you will complete missions and unlock new locations. You also have status bars that must be kept full by completing missions that relate to health, food and emotion.
The concept of this game is great, but the execution didn’t seem to work all that well. I was never able to make a connection with anyone, so I was never able to complete any missions or unlock new locations. I would have like to have been able to see who was playing the game at that moment, so I could pick someone that would have actually responded to me. I also had a hard time picking someone to start a conversation with because the list was so long. I think it would work better if the app picked someone for you at random. That way, you don’t have to scroll through a huge list of people that you don’t know anyway.
This is a fun way to meet people from across the Spanish-speaking globe. It is like having an instant pen pal. Incorporating the learning experience with a game makes it even more interesting. It is a way to encourage players to continue conversations. The app is free to download, but you can immediately unlock all locations for only $0.99. The social aspect of this game was lacking for me, but it may not be the same for everyone. Pick it up in the App Store today and maybe you’ll have a new friend by tomorrow.
