Corning's Vision Of The Future Is All Touchscreen, All The Time
June 7, 2012
Like most of you, I love a good concept video, particularly when those concepts deal with the future of mobile devices. Whether professional or amateur, flashy or mundane, feasible or not, they've almost always got something new -- however minute -- to bring to the table. Of course, just as often, they end up relying a bit too heavily on the current state of affairs, and we ultimately dismiss them as fanciful curiosities instead of visionary predictions.
And so it goes with this latest pair of videos from Corning, makers of Gorilla Glass and the newly-announced Willow Glass products:
Appropriately dubbed "A Day Made of Glass," the five-minute movies aim to show how Corning's various theoretical glass products will be used from sunrise to sunset a few years from now. Basically, Corning's idea is this: Everything will sport some sort of connected touchscreen interface, from stovetops to refrigerator panels to bathroom mirrors and whiteboards and walls. Pretty standard stuff, really. But while the majority of these two shorts are silly and one-dimensional (3-D holograms notwithstanding), they get at least one thing right: However many years from now that all this goes down, Apple will still be the smartphone and tablet maker of choice. Peep the screens and see for yourself:
I wonder how Corning's other mobile customers feel about this...
