New 19-Pin Dock Connector Coming This Year

June 22, 2012
Rumors have been swirling for what seems like forever about Apple's impending abandonment of its aging 30-pin connector. Now, TechCrunch has it on good authority -- indeed, good enough to call the news "confirmed" -- that the next iPhone will feature a proprietary, space-saving 19-pin connector. The blog's John Biggs elaborates (to a bit of appropriate background music):
The new port, partially shown in this Mobilefun post as well as in this video, is similar in size to the Thunderbolt port available on many MacBook devices but I’ve been told by three independent manufacturers that the pin-out will be different.
For accessory makers, this news doesn't come lightly, as their combined future will be full of last-minute model changes, adapter pack-ins, and general uneasiness. Once Apple lets them in on the secret, though, expect to see a slew of new and intriguing third-party add-ons, docks, cables, and clocks. Me? I just have one thing to say: Apple's new connector better be blazin' fast! Via: TUAW Source: TechCrunch
