Unique World Found In Shadow Love

June 8, 2012

Shadow Love ($0.99) by Strawberry Gohan is a game made of hand shadows. Everything from the main character (a rabbit), to the bad guys, and even the platforms are hands. If you’ve ever seen Sia’s music video Soon We’ll Be Found, then you get the gist of how it goes.

Left, right, and up “arrow” keys (pointer fingers) serve as your controls. You’ll need to guide the rabbit to the patch of light at the end of the level to complete it.

The gameplay for this game is surprisingly reminiscent of the classic Nintendo game Super Mario Bros. You have to hop on the bad guys to kill them, and they also act like Mario’s recognizable enemies.

The spiders walk back and forth like goombas, the snails can have their shells kicked like the koopas, and chomping hands are like the piranha plants.

Collect hearts to stay alive and you can also pick up stars to become invincible for a limited time. Losing all your hearts isn’t necessarily the end because you do have continues. Save as much life as you can: you have 25 levels ahead of you, including going up against bosses.

Not everything is made of hands, though. Some platforms are actually a clever nod to the device you’re playing on because shadows of an iPhone either laying on its side or on its back are shown.

Some elements aren’t shadows at all, though they are used sparingly. For example, the fireballs are actually fireballs (again, looking like Mario Bros.).

The whole look and feel of this game is certainly unique, even though the gameplay borrows from classic arcade games.

Apparently the app is $0.99, though it’s 75% off as an “introductory sale.” Hopefully the price doesn’t go up because I think it’s marked exactly what it should be.
