Smite Space Invaders In Smashing Planets

June 8, 2012

Smashing Planets ($0.99) by AppCrowd Entertainment has you defending Earth the best way we now how: blowing things to bits. Alien invaders are trying to destroy the planet, so it’s up to you to literally save the world.

Firing your planet-to-spaceship missiles is done by drawing a line from Earth to the enemy ships. Similar to Flight Control, the missile will follow the path, hopefully destroying the ship.

The quicker you act, the less enemy fire you’ll take. Drop your guard, and Earth’s health meter will dip into the red. At that point, not even Captain Planet can help you.

Bonuses are available as well. Extra ammo, health, or other power ups can be earned by firing one of your missiles to pick them up.

But it seems the aliens have a few tricks up their galactic sleeves as well. Tractor beams, shields, and magnetic flak are all at their disposal and they’re not afraid to use them. Just because you target a missile for their current position doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to hit them.

Campaign and survival modes are both offered. Survival mode is cool to play because you’re immediately set up with a full arsenal of special missiles, but you’ll need to ration them accordingly. Campaign mode is good for getting started.

I don’t know if this is looking a gift horse in the mouth or not, but it seems like extra ammo or health is always available when you need it. Inevitably when your health enters the red, you can count on seeing a heart icon to give you more.

There’s also a radar icon in the bottom right corner that doesn’t seem too useful. Touching it brings up a blocky map

This is a surprisingly addictive game. With over 16 levels, including bosses, you’ll find it hard to put your iDevice down.
