Updated: Spotify Now Playing On Pandora’s Turf
June 19, 2012
Spotify, the music streaming service, will soon bring their mobile radio service to the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad for the first time. Spotify Radio is set to arrive with the Spotify app’s next update, which should soon be available in the App Store, according to Slash Gear.
Eleven months after they invaded the U.S. market, the Swedish-based company is adding considerably to their iOS offerings. Very soon users will experience personalized radio stations, which will include all the music from the company’s huge catalog of songs.
Additionally, users will be able to save individual tracks from these stations to their own playlists, and share the radio stations with friends.
The Spotify Radio service will be completely free in the U.S. and give users the ability to create an unlimited number of customized stations.
Spotify Premium customers will enjoy each station without commercial interruptions. Those using a free Spotify account will hear the occasional ad from a Spotify sponsor. These include: Chevrolet, Durex, Heineken, Red Stag by Jim Beam, Lipton Iced Tea, Macy’s, McDonalds, Progressive, Red Bull, Taco Bell, Verizon Wireless, and Warner Bros.
The arrival of Spotify Radio should add some more heat to the overall streaming music marketplace, which seems to be growing monthly. In addition to Pandora Radio, iOS customers can now enjoy streaming music from a number of providers including TuneIn Radio, Sony's Music Unlimited, Rdio, MOG, and many more.
Launched in the U.S. in July, Spotify's database of songs now numbers 16 million titles.
Note: This feature is only free for subscribers in the U.S. In other areas, a premium subscription is necessary.
Update: The new Version 0.5.2 update is live.
