Updated: Will iOS 6.0 Work On Your iDevice?
June 13, 2012
Note: This report was updated on July 17, 2012 to reflect the elimination by Apple of some iPhone 3GS iOS 6 feature limitations.
While much of the U.S. is only starting to enjoy seasonally high temperatures, many of us can’t wait for the leaves to fall and iOS 6.0 to arrive on iDevices throughout the world. However, before you get too excited about Apple’s next mobile OS, know that not all of the features of iOS 6.0 will work on all iDevices. In some cases, in fact, the OS won’t work at all, as MacRumors first reported.
On Apple’s iOS 6 info page lies this small disclaimer: "Not all features are available on all devices." Here’s what this all means, by iDevice.
Sorry, iOS 6.0 isn’t for you
For the first time, Apple will release a new OS that isn’t compatible for the first-generation iPad. First launched in April 2010, the tablet cannot be upgraded beyond the latest version of iOS 5.0. Additionally, as has been the case for some time, the next OS won’t work with the original iPhone, or with the iPhone 3G.
The iPhone 3GS
Apple remains somewhat committed to the iPhone 3GS in terms of software updates, even though the handset was first released three years ago.
Apple’s third-generation iPhone will receive a redesigned App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes apps. Additionally, the model will support Cloud Tabs in mobile Safari and Facebook integration.
A missing feature is the Offline Reading List. Finally, don’t expect Siri to work on the iPhone 3GS, or FaceTime over cellular.
The iPad 2
The 2011 iPad will work with the following iOS 6.0 features: Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation, Shared Photo Stream, VIP List, and Offline Reading List. However, this tablet model will not receive Siri or FaceTime over cellular.
The iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 looks exactly like the iPhone 4S on the outside. However, its inside components aren't enough to fully support iOS 6.0.
Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone will include: Shared Photo Stream, VIP List, and Offline Reading List.
Not available: Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation, Siri, and FaceTime over 3G.
The iPhone 4S and new iPad
Apple is making all of the features of iOS 6.0 available on their latest two iDevices, the iPhone 4S and new iPad. And yes, this means that come fall the new iPad will have Siri capabilities.

iPod touch
Apple has announced that iOS 6.0 is compatible with the fourth-generation iPod touch. However, this compatibility is limited. For example, iPod touch owners will not gain Siri, for example, or any of the other features that require cellular service such like flyover and turn-by-turn capabilities.

We hope you find this list useful, especially for those with older iDevices.
