AT&T Announces $3.9 Billion Profit, 3 Percent Increase In iPhone Sales

In the just completed quarter, AT&T sold 3.7 million iPhones. This was two-thirds of all mobile subscribers at the second largest U.S. carrier, and was an increase of 100,000 from the same quarter in 2011 or a 3 percent increase. Still, the company sold 14 percent fewer iPhones than they did in the previous quarter. In the previous quarter, AT&T’s iPhone sales were 4.3 million units. According to AT&T’s most recent financial report, the company sold 5.2 million smartphones during April, May, and June. In total, AT&T saw a 10 percent increase in earnings year-over-year, and an 18.8 percent increase for their wireless business. The company reported earnings of $0.66 per share, or a $3.9 billion profit, on sales of $31.58 billion. Previously, Verizon Wireless reported they sold 2.7 million iPhones during the same quarter. In total, the nation’s largest cellular provider announced sales of $28.6 million, with a $1.83 billion profit. Apple is expected to announce their earnings for the previous quarter later in the day.
