AppAdvice App Of The Week For September 3, 2012
Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!
Final Draft WriterCalling all up-and-coming screenwriters! This week’s App of the Week is for you! That’s right — Final Draft Writer is finally in the App Store, after two long years of development.
Be aware, though, that this is not the first official iPad companion app to Final Draft. Nope, that honor goes to Final Draft Reader, even though that app can only read scripts. Final Draft Writer though, like the name implies, allows users to actually read and write scripts on the iPad, so it’s the complete package right here. And it certainly is most welcome.
You can create four different kinds of scripts with Final Draft Writer: Screenplay, Stageplay, TV - Hour Drama, and TV - Sitcom. Selecting any of these will provide you with a professionally formatted template, ready for you to start crafting out the next blockbuster. The keyboard comes with a nice extension that has options for different text and paragraph stylings to make your job easier.
Final Draft Writer also has a handy feature called SmartType, which will remember your character names, scene headings, and more, so you don’t have to continuously type them out each time. Character Highlighting is also available to help you keep track of your developing characters, which is handy if you are discussing them with colleagues.
Now, we all know that you aren’t going to pump out the perfect screenplay on the first try. If you’re serious about screenwriting (or any writing, for that matter), you will probably have a lot of revisions to make, and plenty of updated copies of your script. Final Draft Writer knows this, and that’s why it shows Active or Collated Revisions with colored pages, so it is easier to keep track of.
This is definitely a tool for professionals and amateurs alike, and the app will automatically format and paginate your script to fit current industry standards. The app also packs in many other great features that make this a must-have for any aspiring or serious screenwriter.
If your dream is to make the next Hollywood hit, then you should check out Final Draft Writer. The app is on sale for an introductory price of $29.99, so grab it before it goes up to $49.99 (though that is a quarter of the price for Final Draft 8). The introductory price is actually a bargain for anyone that is serious about their work.

Honorable Mention MovieProWhile the iPhone has had a built-in video recorder since the iPhone 3GS, it doesn’t have a lot of features. In fact, it’s very basic. Fortunately, that’s when having an app like MoviePro comes in handy.
This is a video recording app that is filled to the brim with amazing features. Users can select what video resolution they want their videos to be in — from the standard 1920x1080 resolution all the way down to low-res 320x240 if you so desire. Not only that, but users can also pick how many frames are recorded. You can choose from the 30 fps standard to even a super-slow one fps.
But what if you want to take a photo during a video recording, like in that HTC One commercial? Don’t fret, because MoviePro even has that covered too, as well as the aspect ratio and recording quality. MoviePro even has timer-triggered recording, send to Dropbox, YouTube, and Facebook directly from the app (in full resolution, of course), and you can also set the duration of the recording.
Is there anything that this video capture app can’t do? It’s simply fantastic, and a great addition to your photography app collection on your iPhone or iPod touch, and can work on your iPad. Please be aware that only a few of the features will be made available on the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch.
