Hear More With The iPhone 5
September 12, 2012
Along with expected updates to the camera and screen, Apple announced significant upgrades to the iPhone 5's audio components. The new iPhone sports three microphones, one on the back, one on the front, and one on the bottom. The additional microphone should improve voice recognition and noise canceling functionality. In addition, the iPhone 5's speaker has been improved even while it's been made 20% smaller. The iPhone 5 also supports wideband audio, which means it "fills up" more of the frequency spectrum. However, there are only 20 partners for wideband audio at launch.
