Things To Know Before Updating To iOS 6
September 19, 2012
As we wait for the official launch of iOS 6, here are a few things to keep in mind before updating to Apple’s latest mobile operating system.
Compatibility
The iOS 6 update is compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch fourth-generation, new iPad, and iPad 2. However, some of Apple’s older devices won’t play nice with every feature iOS 6 has to offer.
According to the latest information received from Apple, the following limitations exist:
Siri is available on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad (3rd generation), and iPod touch (5th generation) and requires Internet access. Cellular data charges may apply. Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation are available only on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2 or later, and iPod touch (5th generation). Cellular data charges may apply. FaceTime video calling requires a FaceTime-enabled device for the caller and recipient and a Wi-Fi connection. FaceTime over a cellular network requires iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, or iPad (3rd generation) with cellular data capability. Availability over a cellular network depends on carrier policies; data charges may apply. AirPlay is compatible with the second-generation Apple TV or later. AirPlay Mirroring is available with iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2 or later, and iPod touch (5th generation). In addition, features are country-specific. For a full list of features by country, we encourage you to visit Apple’s website. How to get it Apple will make iOS 6 available Over-The-Air (OTA). For iOS 5 owners, this means you don’t have to sync your device with iTunes in order to get the update. When the update is available, it will launch at Settings > General > Software Update on your iOS device. You will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi connection to download and install the update. Possible issues Apple servers are going to be in overdrive throughout much of the day. As such, expect traffic issues and possible delays. Launch time Apple has remained mum on when iOS 6 will officially launch, only that it will happen sometime today. Assuming they follow the same release schedule as they did with iOS 4 and iOS 5, it should launch at 10 a.m. PDT. Once iOS 6 officially launches, we'll let you know.
