Gridditor Provides A Fresh New Take On Photo Editing On Your iDevice
Gridditor ($0.99) by Tai Shimizu is a unique way to look at photo editing. Yes, this is another photo editor for your iPhone and iPad, but it offers a unique way to edit your iPhone and iPad photographs.
So what separates Gridditor from other apps? The fact that it allows you to see a wide variety of possible combinations of filters right after you apply them is pretty darn cool. And it does so in an intuitive grid interface, hence the name.
When you launch the app for the first time, you will have to load up an image from your Photo Library. For some reason, the app does not allow you to snap new photos from within, but this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. It would be nice to see in the future though.
Once an image is loaded, you will see a grid of that photo, with various filters applied to it that you can preview. The original image will be found in the center of the grid, and you can scroll around to to view more filters from four different families. The farther you get from the center, the stronger the effect is.
When you see one that you like, tap on it to view a bigger preview of it, and then tap on the checkmark to apply it. When a filter is applied, the image will go into a new grid, with more options. This is a great way to see how multiple combinations end up looking, before you actually apply it.
On the grid, you can see which type of family for filters you’ll be going into for the four sides. If you are looking for something different, tap on the name of the family and you can pick something else. Available filter families are: 1970s, black & white, bleach bypass, bright, contrasty, crumpled, dark, desaturated, gloomy, highlights, monochrome, saturated, sepia, shadows, sharp, soft, split tone, toy camera, vibrant, and vignette. As you see, there’s quite a selection to choose from, and when you take the fact that these can all be combined, the possibilities are limitless.
Of course, if there are too many options for you, the settings allows you to choose which filter sets to display. You can also choose the initial set, which is the first four filter families that will appear when you use the app. You can also undo and redo as many times as you need with the arrow buttons.
When you’re satisfied with the results, it’ll be time to share the result. You can share it via email, Twitter, or Facebook. You can also save it to the Camera Roll, print, copy, or even view it with Quick Look. There is also the ability to send it to another third-party app for saving or more editing.
While I already have plenty of photo editing apps on my iPhone already, it’s nice to see developers come up with creative new ways to do something that's been done before. The grid is a fantastic way to see how multiple filters and effects can change a photo before you actually do anything.
