Mansfield’s Return To Apple Apparently Tied To Forstall’s Ouster

November 1, 2012
One of the less reported highlights of Tim Cook’s management shakeup has to do with Bob Mansfield and his abrupt return to Apple after retiring earlier this year. Apparently, Mansfield's return is tied, at least somewhat, to Scott Forstall's exit, according to AllThingsD. Now Apple’s Senior Vice President, Technologies, Mansfield ended his 13-year Apple career in June. During that time, it was Mansfield that oversaw engineering of every major piece of hardware Apple has rolled out in the past decade. According to the report, in addition to making Mansfield an “offer he couldn’t refuse,” Forstall’s exit also played a role.
“It wasn’t a him-or-me situation,” one source said of Mansfield’s return and Forstall’s ouster. “But, put it this way, I think Bob was much more willing to commit to two more years once he knew Scott was on his way out.”
