Wait For It: T-Mobile May Get The iPhone Next Week

T-Mobile, the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the United States, may finally get the iPhone next week. This speculation was noted by Merrill Lynch’s Scott Craig and first reported by CNNMoney. According to the report, Deutsche Telecom could announce the news at the company’s next meeting with analysts, which begins on Dec. 6. Currently, T-Mobile USA has 33 million customers. We’re not sure what to make of this news. For one, we’ve heard this story many, many times in recent years. For another, just one week ago, T-Mobile COO Jim Alling suggested that the iPhone wouldn’t be arriving at his company anytime soon. At the time, he stated:

Make no mistake about it: We would love to carry the iPhone. However, we want the economies to be right for us.

In recent months, T-Mobile has improved their network, in part to support customers that have unlocked iPhones. As Brent Dirks reported at the time:

And the improvements seem to be more than just talk. In internal testing by T-Mobile, an unlocked iPhone 4S running on its HSPA+ network averaged 70 percent faster download speeds than the same handset running on AT&T’s network. And unlike AT&T, T-Mobile also has unlimited data plans.
