Apple Set To Open New R&D Center In Shanghai

January 28, 2013
Apple is expected to open a new research and development center in Shanghai later this year, according to AppleInsider. According to the report, the center’s exterior is complete, “though its interior has yet to be decorated.” Apple will pay $8 million per year in rent for the the new facility. Although previous reports had suggested Apple’s new R&D center would be based near Beijing, it will instead be located in Shanghai’s Pudong economic development zone. In recent years, Apple's commitment to China has become much more apparent as the world's most populous country also became the largest consumer market on the planet. Already this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook has visited the country to discuss emerging technology with government and business leaders. Additionally, rumors suggest that Apple will unveil a less expensive iPhone soon primarily for users in China and other emerging markets. Shanghai is the largest city by population in the People's Republic of China. Source: AppleInsider
