BlackBerry CEO: Apple Is No Longer Innovating

March 18, 2013
BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins believes that Apple is losing the smartphone innovation game. As a result, he believes that Cupertino’s time at the top is nearing an end, according to The Australian Financial Review. Heins says that Apple, despite doing a “fantastic job” previously, has been slow to adapt to a changing marketplace. He states:
History repeats itself again I guess ... the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly. The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old.
Heins’ comments are obviously self-serving. However, they are also correct. Apple does need to innovate again. Each new iOS update has been more conservative than the last, in my opinion. While I’m pretty sure that BlackBerry won’t be the company to bring Apple down, others could do just that if Cupertino continues to rest on their laurels. The BlackBerry CEO is currently promoting the Z10 smartphone. First announced in January, the device represents a “do or die” moment for the company. Once the top smartphone provider, BlackBerry has struggled in recent years as Apple, Samsung, and others have reshaped the industry
